Common questions
Yes. The tool reads the site’s robots.txt for Sitemap lines, and if there are none it checks /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml and /wp-sitemap.xml. If you enter a page address, the website it belongs to is searched. A direct sitemap URL is read as it is, query string included.
Some sites refuse automated requests, limit how often they answer, take too long, or keep their sitemap at an address that robots.txt does not mention. The tool says which of these happened. Failing to find a sitemap does not prove that a site has none: enter the sitemap URL directly or upload the file instead.
No. A URL appearing in a sitemap does not prove that it is indexed, accessible, or up to date. The tool does not visit the pages or check their status.
Yes. A sitemap index lists other sitemaps. The tool shows them so you can choose up to 10, and follows indexes inside them up to 3 levels deep, within the limit of 10 files.
Yes. Choose Upload XML and pick an .xml or .xml.gz file up to 10 MB. It is read in your browser and is not uploaded. If it is a sitemap index, the sitemaps it lists are fetched only if you choose to extract them.
Each extraction reads up to 10 sitemap files, 10 MB each, and returns up to 10,000 unique URLs, within about 25 seconds. When a limit is reached, the results say so and are marked incomplete. Nothing is cut silently.
